How do you think most people injure their backs? If you guessed heavy lifting, you’re wrong. Many back injuries today are caused simply by sitting too much. Life in the modern office means hour after hour of sitting in front of a computer, and most people don’t sit with the correct posture. The result is lower back, neck, and shoulder pain. Spine care from your NYC chiropractor can keep your back healthy, but adding a few simple stretches to your work schedule will also help. Take a break and practice these stretches at the office for good spinal health:
Twists
While sitting in your chair, twist as far as you comfortably can to one side. Hold that pose while you take 10 breaths, and then repeat on the other side. Repeat the entire process a few times until you can feel the pressure on your spine start to ease. Be sure to turn your head to the side as you twist, and don’t ever force your twist past the point of comfort.
Shrugs
Simple shoulder shrugs can help reduce pressure in your neck and shoulders. Instead of just shrugging up and down, move your shoulders forward slightly as you lift them up, and then roll them back as you release the shrug. Repeat this shoulder stretch 10 times in one direction, and then 10 times in the opposite direction.
Hamstring Stretch
You may not think that stretching your legs would be good for your back, but your hamstrings can cause pain in your lower back. Prop the heel of one foot on your desktop. If you don’t feel a stretch in your hamstring, bring your head towards your knee until you do. Stay in this position while you take 10 deep breaths, and then switch legs.

Neck pain is an extremely common problem that chiropractors treat. Chiropractic treatment and massage therapy can be beneficial when you’re experiencing neck pain, but it helps to know what is causing your ache so you can try to avoid it in the future. Here are four problems that often cause neck pain:
Strain
Strain is behind many cases of neck pain. Any number of everyday activities can cause neck strain, from sleeping in the wrong position to not maintaining good posture when sitting in front of a computer. Your neck strain may heal without treatment, as long as you don’t repeat the motion that caused the strain in the first place. If your strain does not clear up on its own, a chiropractor can help you alleviate your pain.
Stress
There is a reason why stressful things are described as a “pain in the neck.” Although stress does not necessarily cause neck pain, this type of pain often becomes worse during stressful periods. This is because people tend to tense their neck muscles when they’re under pressure. Sometimes, this pain clears up when the stress levels are lowered, but in cases of depression and long-term anxiety, this pain can linger. A chiropractor or massage therapist can help with stress-related pain management.
Pinched Nerve
If one of the discs between the vertebrae in the neck bulges or slips, it could pinch one of the spinal nerves. This pain usually begins in the neck and shoots down the arm. This kind of neck pain won’t go away on its own and usually requires the intervention of a chiropractor.
Whiplash
Anytime your neck is jerked in one direction and then the other, you could experience whiplash. This soft tissue injury usually occurs during car accidents, but it can also occur during sports, on amusement park rides, and due to sudden impact. The symptoms of whiplash may go away with home treatment, but a chiropractor can speed the healing process.
While neck pain is a common problem, it’s not one that you simply have to live with. Let Peterson Chiropractic help you eliminate your neck pain through spinal adjustments. Call (212) 242-3210 to make an appointment.

I had the good fortune of being treated by Dr. Peterson several weeks prior to shoulder surgery. Dr. Peterson did an oustanding job of evalualting my situation, and preparing me for the actual operative repair. Pros + great location-easy to reach from major subway lines Cons - waiting too long to try chiropractic care
